Güzelcehisar Lava Columns - Bartın
Have you ever seen a massive wall made of large, angular stones extending toward the sea? The Güzelcehisar Lav Columns in Bartın are exactly such a place. These natural formations emerged when molten lava from deep within the Earth cooled and solidified millions of years ago. It is as if a giant sculptor carefully carved the rocks into pentagonal and hexagonal shapes.
These columns are found only in Bartın in Türkiye and in a few other locations worldwide: Northern Ireland, Scotland, and California. This makes them exceptionally rare. They stand as proof of how wondrous and astonishing our planet can be.

🔥 Time Travel: What Happened 80 Million Years Ago?
These stone columns began forming exactly 80 million years ago. That was long before you were born—even long after the dinosaurs disappeared from Earth!
During this period, molten rock beneath the Earth’s surface, known as magma, erupted through volcanoes and became lava. This extremely hot lava flowed toward the coast and gradually cooled upon contact with seawater and air. Like all materials that cool, the lava contracted and shrank. This contraction created stress and fractures in the rock. These fractures developed in a regular pattern, dividing the lava mass into long columns with hexagonal and pentagonal shapes. In geology, this process is called columnar basalt formation.

📍 Where Are They Found and How Do They Form?
The Güzelcehisar Lav Columns are located along the coast near the village of Güzelcehisar, close to the city center of Bartın in Western Black Sea Region. They stretch in a band approximately five kilometers long along the shoreline.
The columns are composed of basalt, a dark-colored, hard volcanic rock. Some columns rise vertically toward the sea, while others lie horizontally. Their height can reach up to about 50 meters. The combination of vertical and horizontal orientations makes the Güzelcehisar columns even more distinctive and fascinating compared to similar formations elsewhere in the world. The most perfectly shaped sections of the columns are typically found closest to sea level.
🌲 A Visual Feast in Nature
The area where these columns are located blends seamlessly with lush green forests and a deep blue sea, creating a spectacular landscape. This site has been designated a Natural Monument, signifying its exceptional natural beauty and scientific importance.
Wooden walking paths and observation decks have been constructed for visitors. Walking along these paths allows you to observe these 80-million-year-old formations up close while enjoying the breathtaking scenery.
