📘 Who is Halide Edip Adıvar?
Halide Edip Adıvar is one of the most important female writers in Turkish literature and history. She was also a teacher, politician, and a heroine. She fought for women’s rights, taught people to think through her novels, and supported her nation by participating in the War of Independence. She was born in Istanbul in 1884.
👧 Childhood and Education
From a young age, Halide Edip was highly curious and hardworking. She received private lessons at home and learned English and French. She then successfully graduated from Üsküdar American College for Girls. Afterward, she began writing articles and translating books. She never abandoned her education; she continued learning and teaching throughout her life.
✍️ Writing Career
Halide Edip wrote numerous novels, short stories, and articles. In her writings, she particularly addressed themes such as women’s education, freedom, and patriotism. Her books frequently feature brave, thoughtful, and strong female characters. Among her most famous novels are “Ateşten Gömlek”, “Sinekli Bakkal”, and “Vurun Kahpeye”.
Role in the War of Independence
Halide Edip was known not only for her pen but also for her courage. She participated in the War of Independence, served as a nurse during the war, and delivered motivational speeches to the army. She stood alongside Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and was awarded the rank of “Onbaşı”. For this reason, she holds a special place in the heart of the Turkish nation.
🎓 Academic and University Life
After the war, she went abroad and taught in England and France. She later returned to Türkiye and became a professor of literature at Istanbul University. She inspired young people with a love for reading and critical thinking.
