Halil-ür Rahman Camii

Halil-ür Rahman Camii is a historical structure located in the city of Şanlıurfa in Türkiye. This mosque is not merely a place of worship but also resembles a time capsule containing hundreds of years of stories. Alongside the famous Balıklıgöl nearby, it is one of Şanlıurfa’s most visited sites. This unique structure has served as a home to many different cultures throughout history.

On the site where Halil-ür Rahman Camii now stands, a church was built more than 1500 years ago, in the year 504. This church was dedicated to the Virgin Mary. Centuries later, during the Abbasid Caliphate, the church was converted into a mosque. Thus, the foundations of today’s mosque actually belong to a much older church.

The structure has been repaired and modified numerous times throughout history. For example, its minaret was renovated in 1211–1212 during the Ayyubid period. Important historical figures such as Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent also showed interest in this mosque and commissioned its maintenance. As a result, the mosque’s walls carry traces of different eras.

Let us travel back in time. Imagine approximately 1500 years ago, in the year 504. At that time, the site was occupied by the Church of the Virgin Mary. Then, around 1200 years ago, between 813 and 833, the church began to be used as a mosque. The nephew of Saladin repaired the minaret roughly 800 years ago. This mosque stands as a living monument that has witnessed different periods of history.

Halil-ür Rahman Camii is mentioned together with the nearby Balıklıgöl. According to tradition, this is the place where Prophet Ibrahim was thrown into the fire. It is believed that the fire turned into water and the wood into fish. For this reason, both the mosque and the pool are considered sacred by people. The mosque bears the name “Halil-ür Rahman” (Friend of the Merciful), attributed to Prophet Ibrahim.

This mosque attracts attention not only for its religious significance but also for its architecture. Additions and repairs made in different periods have transformed it into a rich historical record. Visitors come here not only to see a historic structure but also to feel the spiritual atmosphere of Balıklıgöl, the subject of many legends.
