Where Is This Castle in the Middle of the Sea?

Kız Kalesi is located in the Erdemli district of Mersin province. It was built on a small islet approximately 600 metres from the coast. Visitors can reach the castle by taking a boat from the shore or simply enjoy its grandeur while gazing across the turquoise sea. It is a historic castle with eight towers rising from the heart of the sea.

How Was Kız Kalesi Built?

This impressive castle was constructed in 1199 by Leon I. Its perimeter is surrounded by massive walls measuring 192 metres in length. Along these walls stand exactly eight towers—triangular, square, and circular in shape. Inside the castle, there were once chapels where people worshipped, cisterns for storing water, and various utility rooms.

An ancient tale is told about Kız Kalesi. According to the legend, a king, fearing a seer’s prophecy that his beloved daughter would be bitten by a snake, built this castle in the middle of the sea to protect her. One day, however, a snake hidden inside a basket of grapes sent to the castle bit the princess. Though this story is tragic, it reveals just how deeply the castle was cherished and how fiercely it was meant to be safeguarded.
