Mevlana
The Voice of Love, Wisdom, and Peace
Mevlânâ Celâleddîn-i Rûmî was born in 1207 in the city of Balkh, in what is now Afghanistan, and migrated to Anatolia with his family during childhood. He spent his life in Konya, where he became renowned as both a great thinker and a mystic who spoke to people with love. Even today, Mevlânâ’s words calling humanity to live in love, tolerance, and unity continue to inspire millions.
Journey Through Time: What Is a Mystic?
A mystic is someone who deeply loves God, approaches others with kindness, and places great importance on purifying the heart and cultivating love. Mystics follow a special spiritual path known as tasavvuf. To them, what matters is not merely knowledge, but becoming a beautifully moral and loving person.
A mystic:
Mystics, like Mevlânâ, remind us: “Goodness comes from within. If you keep your heart pure, you will also beautify the world.”
Educational Life and Development
Mevlânâ’s father, Bahâeddin Veled, was one of the leading scholars of his time. Mevlânâ received his early education from him. He later studied in cities such as Damascus and Aleppo in fields including jurisprudence, Quranic exegesis, theology, and logic. By a young age, he had become an excellent teacher. However, the greatest transformation in his life began when he met Şems-i Tebrizî. Şems brought forth the spiritual dimension within Mevlânâ. Through this friendship, Mevlânâ learned to speak not only through books but also through the heart and soul. Under Şems’s influence, he turned toward poetry and the Sufi dance of the sema.
His Wisdom and Spiritual Teachings
Mevlânâ taught people this: “Whoever you are, come back again!”
His thought is grounded in the following principles:
- Love: Being sincerely connected to all living beings.
- Tolerance: Showing understanding toward others’ mistakes.
- Unity: Seeing people not as divided but as united.
- Inner journey: Knowing that you cannot understand the outer world without first knowing your own heart.
