Nevşehir Pancarlık Church
The Pancarlık Church is an ancient rock-cut structure located in the Pancarlık Valley within the Ortahisar district of Nevşehir. Like many other structures in Cappadocia, it was carved out of soft rock by human hands. What makes it special is the excellent preservation of its wall paintings (frescoes).
Cappadocia has a unique geography formed by the hardening of volcanic ash deposited thousands of years ago. Rock-cut structures like this church helped the people living here at the time to find shelter and freely practice their faith.

Time Travel
When the wall paintings, or frescoes, of the Pancarlık Church were studied by scientists, they were determined to date from the first half of the 11th century.
What does the 11th century mean? Consider this: today we are in the 2020s. The 11th century was a time period that occurred approximately 1000 years ago. At that time, life in Türkiye and around the world was very different from today. This church is like a time machine, conveying to us the life of that thousand-year-old past through its wall paintings.

Stories on the Walls
The interior of the church is filled with wall paintings depicting scenes from the Bible, the holy book of Christianity. The church’s architecture is simple: it consists of a single main nave and a semicircular apse on the eastern side.
The frescoes of this church are typically painted on a green background, a distinctive feature that sets it apart from other churches in Cappadocia. The paintings illustrate important Christian events such as the Annunciation (the announcement of the Gospel), the Transfiguration (the transformation of Jesus’ appearance), and the Miracle at Cana (the turning of water into wine). The vividness and excellent preservation of these images bring the art of that era vividly into the present.
