Peyami Safa
Peyami Safa, born on 2 April 1899 in Istanbul, is one of the most powerful and determined voices in Turkish literature. Despite all the hardships life presented him, he never abandoned reading, learning, or writing, and dedicated himself to understanding the depths of the human soul. He died in Istanbul on 15 June 1961.
Childhood and Family
Peyami Safa’s father was the poet İsmail Safa. However, Peyami lost his father when he was only two years old. At an early age, he contracted a serious bone disease (bone tuberculosis) and was forced to spend many years receiving treatment in hospitals.
Due to this difficult illness and family hardships, he was unable to attend school regularly. Instead of giving up, he chose to educate himself. He learned French at a young age and built a vast world of knowledge by reading every book he could find.
School and Working Years
To support his family and earn a living, Peyami Safa began working at the age of thirteen. He worked as a clerk in the postal service, taught as a teacher, and ultimately devoted his life entirely to writing and journalism.
Throughout his writing career, he published thousands of articles, short pieces, and stories in newspapers, and co-founded newspapers with his brother to share his ideas with the public.
Server Bedii and Cingöz Recai
Peyami Safa wrote both serious literary novels and entertaining, thrilling books to support himself. For his popular works, he used the pen name Server Bedii, inspired by his mother’s name.
The clever, cunning, and charming thief character he created under this name, Cingöz Recai, became one of the most beloved detective heroes in Turkish literature.

His Ideas and Art
According to Peyami Safa, a person was more than just a physical body; emotions, thoughts, and the soul were far more significant. Therefore, in his novels, he masterfully portrayed people’s joys, fears, loneliness, and moral dilemmas (their psychologies).
He thoroughly examined both Eastern and Western cultures and argued that society must remain rooted in its own traditions, national values, and spiritual heritage while also keeping pace with global developments.
