Konya’s Selçuklu district hides a uniquely special place nestled between the steep walls of a deep, narrow valley: Sille.
This neighborhood, like a time machine with its thousands of years of history, invites us on a captivating journey through its natural beauty and historical treasures.
⏳ Sille’s Ancient Past
Life in Sille began not hundreds but thousands of years ago. Research shows that people have lived here since the Early Bronze Age.
Throughout history, Sille has been home to many civilizations:
- 🏺 Phrygians and Romans: In antiquity, Sille was an important stop along the trade and pilgrimage route connecting Istanbul to Jerusalem.
- ✝️ Early Christianity: During the earliest years of Christianity, Saint Paul and his companions took refuge in the mountains around Sille to escape persecution.
🕌 Seljuk and Ottoman Period: After 1071, Sille came under Turkish rule and for centuries remained a place where Muslim and Christian communities lived together in harmony. SeljukSultan Alaeddin Keykubat placed the area under special protection.

🗺️ Mysterious and Enjoyable Places to Visit
Every street in Sille holds a unique surprise:
- 🕳️ Mysterious Caves: Approximately 40 caves have been carved into the mountain slopes. These caves were used in ancient times as homes or churches.
- ⛪ Church of Saint Elenia: During her journey to Jerusalem, Empress Helena, mother of the Roman Emperor, visited Sille and commissioned this magnificent church.
- 🌉 Devil’s Bridge: One of Sille’s symbols, this ancient bridge draws attention with its breathtaking view along the valley.
- 🕌 Historic Mosques: Numerous mosques reflecting Seljuk and Ottoman architecture can be found, including Alaeddin Mosque, Çay Mosque, and Mezaryaka Mosque.
🏛️ Sille Museum: Treasure of the Past
This building, formerly a school and municipal office, was converted into a museum in 2017.
In this 750-square-meter museum, you can discover these fascinating artifacts:
- Ground Floor:
- The inner covering of the Kaaba (Kisve-i Şerif)
- Very ancient manuscript books
- Small models of historic structures in Sille
- Upper Floor:
- Traditional clothing from past eras
- Colorful pottery and carpets
- One of the most unusual items: shoes (çarıklar) made from truck tires!
Visit Information: The museum is open daily from 10:00 to 18:00, except on Mondays, and offers free guided tours.
