Şiran (District)
Did you know that Şiran, one of the oldest settlements in Gümüşhane, derives its name from the Persian word meaning “lions”? Let’s explore this beautiful district, shining like a crescent amid the mountains.
📚 Where Does the Name Come From?
The word “Şiran” is of Persian origin and means “lions”. 【1】Originally, the district center was located in the village of Erenkaya, but it was moved to its current location in the 1800s. The famous traveler Evliya Çelebi also mentioned this beautiful place in his travelogue.
Believed to have been established during the early period of Seljuk Turkish settlement in Anatolia, Şiran has hosted many civilizations throughout history. 【2】It officially gained district status in 1925.
🌙 The Crescent Amid the Mountains
Şiran lies at an elevation of approximately 1,400 meters above sea level, resembling a vast plateau.【3】To the north lie the Tersun Mountains, to the south the Çimen Mountains, and to the east the Çilhoroz Mountains. These ranges encircle the district on three sides, giving it the appearance of a crescent when viewed from above.
The most important water source in the district is the Kelkit River. Additionally, cheerful streams such as Akbulak, Karaca, and Zunzurt flow into this large river. Summers in Şiran are hot and dry, while winters are very cold and snowy.

🍎 Colorful Kilims and Sweet Apples
The most renowned handicraft associated with Şiran is the “ala kilim.” These unique kilims are woven on handlooms in villages using wool and goat hair. Their patterns are dyed with natural root dyes and can remain intact for many decades.
The local population primarily sustains itself through agriculture and animal husbandry. Şiran apples are especially delicious. Additionally, the floral honey produced by the region’s bees is considered a remedy for all ailments.
