Tercan (District)
Tercan is a district of Erzincan known for its historical and cultural richness. Located approximately 88 kilometers from the city center, this beautiful district attracts attention through both its natural landscape and its heritage preserved from antiquity to the present day.
Tercan’s Historical Journey
Tercan’s history dates back to ancient times. It has served as a home to numerous civilizations including the Urartians, Assyrians, Medes and Persians. After the Battle of Manzikert, the region came under Turkish rule and was definitively incorporated into the Ottoman Empire during the reign of Kanuni Sultan Süleyman.
A Female Ruler: Mama Hatun
The most prominent name associated with Tercan is Mama Hatun. Mama Hatun was a powerful woman who became ruler of the Saltukoğulları Beyliği in 1191. She ruled for ten years after a fierce struggle against her nephews. Mama Hatun commissioned a large külliye bearing her name, recognized as one of the most original examples of medieval Turkish architecture.
