Who Commissioned This Beautiful Building?
The Tokat Mevlevihanesi was first built in 1638 by a philanthropist named Sülün Muslu Ağa. Muslu Ağa commissioned it as a külliye where people could gather to share the loving teachings of Mevlana Celaleddin Rumi. Although the building suffered damage from fires over the centuries, it was always restored and has survived to this day.【1】
What Is Inside the Mevlevihane?
This two-story building, mostly constructed of wood, is one of the finest examples of Ottoman architecture. Inside, there are small rooms where dervishes (students) lived, and most importantly, a large hall known as the Semahane. The Semahane features sixteen wooden pillars, each adorned with plaques inscribed with the names of important figures. Adjacent to it is the Muslu Ağa Mansion, where the Sheikh’s family once lived.
Can We Visit It Today?
Yes, today it is open to the public as the Tokat Mevlevî Culture and Foundation Works Museum. Inside, you can view ancient handwritten manuscripts, glittering large candelabras, and colorful handwoven carpets. As you stroll through the museum’s garden, you may feel as if you have stepped into a time machine.

⏳ A Journey Through Time:
Let us travel back to 1638! When Muslu Ağa first commissioned this building, horse-drawn carriages roamed the streets and people lit their homes with oil lamps. Since then, this structure has stood for more than 380 years.
