Where Is Torul and What Kind of Place Is It?
Torul is situated in the interior of the Eastern Black Sea region, nestled in a deep valley where the Harşit Çayı winds its way through. The district is encircled by towering mountains that act like a massive wall, protecting it. The natural environment here is exceptionally rich, covered entirely with tall pine and oak trees. In ancient times, when the area was filled with impassable cliffs, people used it as a secure refuge.

Where Does the Name Torul Come From?
In very ancient times, the people living in this region called Torul "Ardasa". However, one day the Seljuk Sultan Tuğrul Bey arrived in the area and set up his large tent here. Over time, the name of this beautiful place came to be known as "Torul" in reference to him.
Historical Fire Towers and Castles
Throughout history, Torul has been located on a strategically important route. In ancient times, the Genoese who lived here built fire towers on the mountain peaks to communicate. When danger arose, they lit fires on the towers to send signals to one another.
Today, you can still see the Torul Kalesi, one of the finest examples of these towers. The district also contains a very ancient monastery, built approximately 1100 years ago and renowned for its mineral wealth.
Life and Entertainment in Torul
The people of Torul live in harmony with the trees. Due to the abundance of forests, small workshops in homes produce exquisite wooden items. The wooden spoon or rolling pin in your home may well have come from here! Torul is not only rich in history—it also loves sports. The district has a highly successful volleyball team. Moreover, you can never get enough of its famous sweets: pestil and köme. Every year, many children visit to explore natural wonders such as the Karaca Cave.
