Tunceli Museum
Tunceli Museum is an important structure that, like a vast treasure chest, holds thousands of years of history and culture. Museums are places that allow us to understand the lives of people who lived in the past by showing us the objects, tools, and artworks they used. Have you ever imagined touching a pottery vessel made thousands of years ago or examining an ancient coin up close? This museum offers you exactly that opportunity.

⭐ Time Travel: The Story of the Museum Building
The museum building was originally constructed between 1935 and 1937 as a barracks for soldiers (a building where soldiers lived). That means it is nearly 90 years old! It is truly fascinating that a building once used for military purposes has become a museum. Due to its architectural features characteristic of the Early Republican Period, the building has been placed under protection. After being used for various purposes over the years, it was restored between 2015 and 2020 and transformed into the present-day Tunceli Museum.
🗺️ What Can You See in the Museum?
The Tunceli Museum brings together artifacts from many different fields to tell the story of Tunceli and its surrounding region’s past. The museum includes sections that illustrate the history of the area from ancient times to the present.

🏺 Archaeology and Numismatics Sections
Archaeology is the scientific discipline that studies ancient objects and structures buried beneath the earth. In the Archaeology section, artifacts from very early periods such as the Stone Age (Paleolithic), the Bronze Age, and the Roman Period are displayed, including stone tools and ceramic vessels. In the Numismatics section, you can see coins used from the Greek Period through the Ottoman Period. These coins are essential for understanding who lived during each era and how the economy functioned.
🏡 Ethnography and Belief Sections
Ethnography examines the traditional lifestyle, culture, and artifacts of a region. In the Ethnography section, you will find traditional clothing, handwoven textiles, and everyday objects belonging to The Tunceli region. The Belief section uses reconstructions to illustrate the rituals and artifacts associated with Alevism, a faith that holds an important place in Tunceli’s cultural structure. This draws attention as one of the few museums in Türkiye to dedicate a specific section to this subject.
🌲 Other Interesting Sections
The museum also features halls that explain traditional agricultural methods and introduce the region’s natural environment (flora and fauna). In the outdoor courtyard, stone artifacts such as Ram and horse-shaped gravestones, which hold significant cultural importance in the region, are displayed. These stones provide clues about the beliefs and artistic perspectives of people in the past.
