Tunceli Museum
Tunceli Müzesi is a significant structure that, like a vast treasure chest, safeguards thousands of years of history and culture. Museums are places where we come to understand the lives of people who lived in the past by viewing the objects, tools, and artworks they used. Have you ever imagined touching a pottery vessel made thousands of years ago or examining an ancient coin up close? This museum offers you exactly that opportunity.

⭐ Time Travel: The Story of the Museum Building
The museum building was originally constructed between 1935 and 1937 as a barracks for soldiers. This means it is nearly 90 years old! It is truly fascinating that a building once used for military purposes has become a museum. Due to its architectural features characteristic of the Early Republican Period, the structure has been placed under protection. After being used for various purposes over the years, it was restored between 2015 and 2020 and transformed into the current Tunceli Museum.
🗺️ What Can You See in the Museum?

🏺 Archaeology and Coin Sections
Archaeology is the scientific study of ancient objects and structures buried beneath the earth. In the Archaeology section, artifacts from very early periods such as the Stone Age Paleolithic era through the Bronze Age and Roman period are displayed, including stone tools and ceramic vessels. In the Coin section, you can view currency used from the Greek period to the Ottoman period. These coins are essential for understanding who ruled during each era and how the economy functioned.
🏡 Ethnography and Belief Sections
Ethnography examines the traditional lifestyle, culture, and material objects of a region. The Ethnography section displays traditional clothing, handwoven textiles, and everyday items from the Tunceli region. The Belief section vividly illustrates the rituals and artifacts associated with Alevism, a faith of central importance to Tunceli’s cultural identity. This makes the museum stand out among others in Türkiye for dedicating a specific section to this subject.
🌲 Other Interesting Sections
The museum also includes rooms that explain traditional agricultural methods and showcase the region’s natural environment, including its flora and fauna. In the outdoor courtyard, stone artifacts such as the culturally significant ram and horse-shaped tombstones are exhibited. These stones offer insights into the beliefs and artistic sensibilities of people from the past.
