Who is Cahit Zarifoğlu?
A poet and writer known in Turkish literature for his original style
Cahit Zarifoğlu was born on 1 July 1940 in Ankara, into a family originally from Kahramanmaraş. Due to his father’s civil service, he spent his childhood and youth in various cities across Türkiye. He completed his primary and secondary education in Siverek, Ankara, Kızılcahamam, and Kahramanmaraş.
Years of youth
Zarifoğlu’s youth was a period during which his interest in literature steadily grew. While completing his high school education, he worked for local newspapers and wrote poetry. Although he sometimes struggled with his schoolwork, he never abandoned his passion for writing during this time. He also engaged in sports, joined a wrestling club, and became a successful wrestler. Additionally, through training he received at the Turkish Bird Camp, he flew gliders and, at a young age, became involved in aviation by flying motorless aircraft.

After completing high school, Zarifoğlu moved to Istanbul in 1961 and began his higher education at Istanbul University in the Department of German Language and Literature. During this period, he continued writing poetry, and his works were published in school magazines and major literary journals of the time. To support himself, he also worked for various newspapers and magazines. Notably, the journal Yol and the newspaper Babıâli’de Sabah were significant milestones in his professional life.
His legacy in children’s literature
Cahit Zarifoğlu is also known for his works addressed to children, not only adults. One of his most famous such works, “Serçekuş”, stands out for its poetic language, distinct from traditional fairy tale narration. The story of Serçekuş deepens through the observations of a sparrow about nature and humanity. This work is regarded as one of the important examples of Turkish children’s literature.

Throughout his literary career, Zarifoğlu contributed to literature both individually and socially, and is remembered as an artist distinguished by his original expression and inner depth. The poet is also known not only for his literary personality but also for his devotion to his family and children. As a father of two, Cahit Zarifoğlu was a writer who deeply loved children and was particularly noted for his creations aimed at them.
In early 1987, Zarifoğlu fell ill and passed away on 7 June 1987 in Istanbul. The imprint he left on literature continues to live on for both child and adult readers alike.
