Yellow-eyed Penguin
The yellow-eyed penguin, or hoiho (Megadyptes antipodes), belongs to the penguin family. It is one of the rare and fascinating birds found along the coasts and shorelines of New Zealand. The most distinctive feature that sets it apart from other penguins is the yellow ring around its eyes—which is precisely why it is called the “yellow-eyed penguin.”
What Do They Look Like?
Their heads and napes are yellowish-brown, the area around their eyes is bright yellow, their backs are bluish-gray, and their bellies are pure white. Their beaks and feet are pink, but most interestingly, the yellow coloring around their eyes becomes more prominent as they grow older.

How Big Do They Grow?
They reach a height of 62–79 cm, nearly as long as a school backpack! Their weight ranges from 5–8 kilograms, which is about the size of a large watermelon! 🍉
How Long Do They Live?
In the wild, they typically live for an average of 8–10 years. However, the luckier individuals can live up to 15–20 years. The greatest threats to their survival are diseases, difficulty finding food, and trash left behind by humans.

What Do They Eat?
The ocean is their open buffet! 🍽️ Their favorite foods include fish, squid, and small marine creatures. They swim swiftly underwater to catch their prey.
Where Do They Live?
To see them, you must visit the southern coasts of New Zealand. Unlike most penguins, they do not enjoy crowds. They are solitary birds that build their nests in quiet, vegetated areas.

Conservation Status
The yellow-eyed penguin is classified as “Endangered” by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). This reflects a serious decline in their wild population and a significant risk of extinction. Why? Because their habitats are disappearing, the oceans are becoming polluted, and certain diseases are threatening their survival. Their global numbers have dwindled drastically, making their protection critically important.
