The Rock Tombs of the Kings, which have become the symbol of the city, are monumental tombs carved into high cliffs during the Kingdom of Pontus. What is the Kingdom of Pontus?

The Kingdom of Pontus was a Hellenistic state established in the 3rd century BCE along the southern coast of the Black Sea. Its capital was Amasya. One of the most notable remnants of this kingdom is the King’s Rock Tombs in Amasya. These tombs were carved into the slopes of the mountains and used as royal burial sites. The structures that still stand today are considered among the most magnificent monuments of the Pontic period.
