Çarpanak Adası
Çarpanak Adası is located in the north of Van. It lies in the northeastern region of Lake Van, directly opposite Çitören Village, which is under the administration of the central district. The island covers an area of approximately 76,595 square meters.
What Does the Name of the Island Mean?
Although the island is known today as Çarpanak, it was formerly called "Ktutz." This intriguing name means "magic point" in an ancient language. The island’s position on the lake underscores the accuracy of this name.
How Was the Island Formed?
Çarpanak was not always an island. Until about a century ago, it was connected to the mainland and formed a peninsula. However, as the waters of Lake Van rose rapidly, the land connection was severed, leaving the island isolated in the middle of the lake.
What Is on the Island?
Today, no one lives on the island. On its surface stands a large architectural complex known as the "Ktutz Monastery." In the past, this complex included chapels, a library, guesthouses, and dining halls. Over time, these structures fell into ruin, and today only the Saint Jean (Saint John) Church remains standing.

What Is the Architecture of the Church Like?
The church attracts attention with its architecture. Its dome is covered by a conical roof resembling the kümbet tombs of Seljuk architecture. It was constructed using cream- and brown-colored Ahlat stones. The decorative elements and craftsmanship at the entrance represent a fine example of the convergence of artistic traditions from different cultures.
Why Is Natural Life Important?
Çarpanak Adası is kept closed to tourism to preserve its natural ecosystem. The island is home to many unique species of flora and fauna found nowhere else in Türkiye. As a result, it continues to serve as a safe haven for plants and animals.
