Karagöz and Hacivat

Son Güncellenme: 02.12.2025

🎭Who Are Karagöz and Hacivat?

Laughter and Wisdom from the Shadows

Karagöz and Hacivat are the unforgettable duo of Turkish shadow theatre. These characters, brought to life by leather puppets manipulated behind a screen, have amused both children and adults for centuries. Karagöz is blunt and speaks his mind without restraint. Hacivat, by contrast, is refined, speaks in ornate language, and is sometimes overly bookish.

Although they appear to be opposites, in every performance they complete each other!

🕰️ When and Where Did They Emerge?

The origins of Karagöz and Hacivat date back to the 14th century. According to legend, these two workers, employed in the construction of a mosque in Bursa, distracted the master craftsmen with their banter. Their interactions later evolved into the form of shadow theatre and have endured from the Ottoman era to the present day.

🎪 What Is Shadow Theatre?

A light is shone behind a white screen. The leather puppets of Karagöz, Hacivat, and other characters are manipulated using rods. These figures cast shadows onto the screen, appearing to the audience as if they are alive.

Through their voices, imitations, and jokes, this performance both entertains and educates.
