Afyonkarahisar Castle
Imagine a massive rock rising toward the sky right at the heart of the city! This majestic rock is the famous Afyonkarahisar Kalesi, which has guarded Afyonkarahisar for thousands of years like a sentinel. This fortress was not built merely from stone but also from mysterious tales and heroic deeds. Let us embark on a journey to the summit of this colossal rock!
The Giant Rock at the City’s Heart: Where Is This Fortress?
Afyonkarahisar Kalesi stands on a volcanic rock formation 226 meters high. Visible from every corner of the city, it appears as if it has sprung straight from the pages of a fairy tale. Climbing to the fortress can be tiring, as you must ascend hundreds of steps, but the view awaiting you at the summit is undoubtedly worth the effort!
A Thousand-Year History: Who Built This Fortress?
This fortress is so ancient that it boasts a history of 3,340 years. It was first used for defense during the Hittite period, in very ancient times, and was known as “Hapanuva.” Later, the Phrygians lived here and built temples dedicated to the Mother Goddess Cybele. The Seljuk Sultan Alaaddin Keykubat and Ottoman sultans repaired and expanded the fortress, shaping it into its current form.
A Journey Through Time
Around 3,350 years ago, the Hittites, one of Anatolia’s earliest and most powerful empires, discovered the rock and used it as a refuge against enemies. Later, the Seljuks added a palace and a small mosque to the fortress.
Mysterious Legends of the Fortress: Giant Horses and Wise Grandmothers
Karahisar Kalesi is surrounded by endless tales. One of the most beloved concerns the horse Düldül of the Islamic Caliph, Hz. Ali. According to legend, Hz. Ali, riding Düldül, flew from mountain to mountain and passed through Afyon. When the horse stepped onto the rock, its hoofprint remained imprinted on the stone. Today, visitors to the fortress can still see this mark!
Another entertaining legend is that of the Wise Old Woman. In the past, some people wanted to remove the fortress because it cast a shadow over their homes. A clever old woman said, “I will carry the fortress, but first you must finish all my chores.” The villagers plowed her entire field and painted her house. When their work was done, the woman said, “Now bring the fortress to my back and I will carry it,” astonishing everyone and accomplishing her task for free through her wit.
The Place Where Wishes Come True: The Maiden’s Tower
Kalenin highest points houses the Kız Kulesi. This spot is a destination for those wishing to marry or seeking to make a wish. People come here and shout, “May my golden throne open, may fortune smile upon me!” If you see people tying cloth strips to the trees near the fortress gate, do not be surprised—this is a very old tradition.
