⏳ A Journey Through Time
The earliest structures and paintings in Al Oda date back approximately 1,200 to 1,400 years, between the 8th and 10th centuries AD. During this period, people adapted natural caves in the region as places of worship and living quarters. Over time, the structure was used by different religious communities.
⛰️ Location and Construction
Al Oda is situated in the Mut district of Mersin, near the Alahan Manastırı, on the edge of a deep ravine.
The church was created by shaping a natural cave. The main chamber was carved from the rock in a cradle vault shape, resembling a half-circle ceiling. The rock church and monastery section are separated from each other by a deep ravine. Inside, there is also a rock-cut tomb (sarcophagus) that may have belonged to an important religious figure.

🎨 Secrets of the Walls: Paintings and Mosaics
The most distinctive feature of Al Oda is the paintings (frescoes) and mosaics on its walls and ceiling. These artworks commonly depict animal figures, crosses, geometric patterns, and plant motifs.
To create the paintings, the rock surface was smoothed with straw and plaster, after which figures were painted onto the surface using pigments. The colors used include vibrant shades of black, yellow, red, and blue. These artworks reflect the religious beliefs and artistic perspectives of the people of that era.
