The Aydın Archaeology Museum was first established approximately 66 years ago, in 1959, in a small room. Artifacts previously displayed in schools or small buildings multiplied as excavations in the region increased. Consequently, in 1973, a larger museum became necessary, and the artifacts were moved to a new building. Today, the museum welcomes visitors in a modern and spacious structure.

What Is Exhibited in the Museum?
The artifacts in the museum are primarily excavated from ancient cities around Aydın. Important sites among these include Tralleis, Magnesia, Nysa, Alabanda, and Priene. The museum displays its collections in three main sections: the Archaeology Section, the Numismatics Section, and the Ethnography Section.
Archaeology Section: This section exhibits statues, vessels, and various objects made from stone, glass, and fired clay. For example, colorful mosaics (pictures made of small stones) from large Roman villas and statues of ancient deities can be seen here. Additionally, sarcophagi and ossuaries (small bone containers) used by ancient people to hold human remains are also displayed in this section.
Numismatics Section: In this hall, ancient coins made of gold, silver, and bronze from different historical periods—including Ancient Greece, Rome, and the Ottoman Empire—are exhibited. These coins provide insight into trade and economic conditions of those eras.
Ethnography Section: Ethnography is the study of human cultures. This section displays everyday objects used by people in recent history who lived in Aydın and its surroundings, such as carpets, kilims, Zeybek costumes, and traditional silver jewelry.
