Aydın
About the City
Aydın is a city of historical and economic significance located in the southwest of the Aegean Region. To the west of the city lies the Aegean Sea, which has led to the development of significant seaside tourism, particularly in coastal districts such as Kuşadası.
Aydın was established on the fertile lands surrounding the Büyük Menderes River. This plain is one of Türkiye’s most important agricultural regions. Aydın ranks among the top producers of figs and olives in Türkiye.
Historically, the lands of Aydın were home to the ancient civilization of Ionia. The world-famous ancient cities of Milet and Didyma (Didim) lie within Aydın’s boundaries. These cities were leading centers of science, philosophy, and architecture in the ancient world.
Aydın is also remembered for its local resistance leaders during the War of Independence, such as Yörük Ali Efe. In this regard, it has played an important role in both ancient and modern history.
