Behzad-I Veli Cami
Behzad-ı Veli Camii is a historical place of worship located in the center of Tokat province. It derives its name from Behzad-ı Veli, one of the region’s important religious figures. This mosque serves both as a place of worship and as a spiritual center where people come to pray and visit.
Location and Historical Background
Behzad-ı Veli Camii is situated in the heart of Tokat city among other historical structures. Behzad-ı Veli, after whom the mosque is named, is regarded by the public as a “veli” — a wise and pious person close to God. Over time, the site of the mosque became a destination for people seeking to pray and make offerings. The exact date of the mosque’s construction is unknown. However, based on its architectural features, it is believed to have been built toward the end of the Ottoman period.

Architectural Features
Behzad-ı Veli Camii has a simple and elegant appearance. It is built on a plan close to a square rectangle. The walls combine stone and brick. A single dome covers the ceiling. The entrance door is very modest, and decorative elements throughout the structure are minimal. The mihrab (the section where the imam leads prayer) and the minbar (the pulpit from which sermons are delivered) are constructed in accordance with traditional mosque design.
The minaret is located in the southwest corner of the mosque. It has a cylindrical body and a single balcony (where the muezzin recites the call to prayer). Access to the minaret is via stone stairs. Light entering through the windows illuminates the interior of the mosque. The mosque emphasizes simplicity and a sense of tranquility over ornamentation.
Religious and Cultural Significance
Behzad-ı Veli Camii is not merely a place of worship but also a site of spiritual devotion for the local community. Behzad-ı Veli is venerated as a saint, and people come here to pray and make wishes. The mosque becomes especially crowded during Kandil nights and religious holidays. This tradition demonstrates the mosque’s important role in the religious and cultural life of Tokat.
Preservation and Current Status
Behzad-ı Veli Camii is under protection by the Tokat Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism. As a historical monument, it has been repaired at regular intervals and remains open for worship today. Thanks to restoration efforts, the mosque has successfully preserved both its historical appearance and its functional purpose.
