Bilecik Mihalbey Hanı
Mihalbey Han is a structure built in the Gölpazarı district of Bilecik Province to accommodate caravans and merchants undertaking long journeys. Such structures are known as han—large buildings where travelers stayed and trade was conducted. Mihalbey Han is an example reflecting the early Ottoman architectural style.
History and Construction
The construction of the han began in the year 1415 and was completed in 1418. The patron of the building was Mihal Bey, a prominent figure of that era. Mihalbey Han served as a menzil han—a waystation established between two resting points—to provide travelers with a secure place to rest along major trade routes.

Architectural Features
Mihalbey Han exhibits the following architectural characteristics:
- Plan: The structure has a rectangular layout. The interior spaces are arranged in four sections aligned along an east-west axis.
- Materials: Thick cut stone and brick were used in construction. The walls were built using an alternating pattern of one course of stone and one course of brick—a technique known as almaşık—characteristic of the period’s architecture.
- Ceiling System: The interiors are covered with brick vaults known as beşik tonoz—semi-cylindrical arched ceilings. This system reinforces the structural integrity of the building.
- Entrance: The entrance is located on the western facade. Above the entrance is a kitabe—an inscription—that provides information about the builder and the date of construction.
Function and Location
The han is situated along an ancient trade route that extended from Bilecik toward Ankara. Mihalbey Han provided travelers with lodging, shelter for animals, and storage space for goods. Located in the center of Gölpazarı, the structure is in close proximity to the mosque and bathhouse commissioned by Mihal Bey.
