Blaundos Ancient City
Ulubey Blaundos Ancient City is an extremely old settlement located in the Ulubey district of Uşak. This city served as a cultural bridge between two major civilizations: Phrygia and Lydia. Founded during the Hellenistic period, it continued to thrive through the Roman and Byzantine eras. Today, it is recognized as an archaeological and historical site of significant importance.
Where Is It Located?
Blaundos is approximately 40 km from the city center of Uşak. It lies near the village of Sülümenli, which belongs to the Ulubey district. Built on a high hilltop, the city is surrounded by deep valleys. This natural topography was deliberately chosen to enhance the city’s defensive capabilities.

Foundation and Historical Journey
Blaundos was established by Macedonian military colonies settled in the region after Alexander the Great’s campaigns in Anatolia. The city’s name derives from this military community. During the Hellenistic period, it functioned as a military outpost; in the Roman era, it expanded significantly and was filled with new structures. Life continued in the city during the Byzantine period, with remains from the early Christian era attesting to this continuity.

Architectural Structures and Urban Layout
Excavations in Blaundos have uncovered numerous architectural structures, including:
- theater,
- stadium,
- temples,
- agora (city square),
- burial structures,
- walls,
- aqueducts
The city’s planning reflects the orderly urban concepts of the Roman and Hellenistic periods. Traces of Doric architecture are visible in the temples.
One of the most notable features within the city are rock-cut tombs carved into steep cliffs. Some are large and ornate, with columned entrances. A recently discovered 2,000-year-old monumental rock tomb provides significant insights into burial customs of that era.

Aqueducts and Restorations
Among Blaundos’s most striking structures are the ancient aqueducts. A total of nine aqueducts have been identified in the city. Five of these have been restored and rebuilt using original materials and techniques. These aqueducts represent engineering marvels designed to transport water from distant regions into the city. The restorations have preserved their historical integrity while making them suitable for both scientific study and tourism.

Cultural and Archaeological Significance
The Ancient City of Blaundos possesses a layered history due to its traces from three major periods: Hellenistic, Roman, and Byzantine. Archaeological findings demonstrate that continuous human habitation in this region lasted for approximately a thousand years. Excavations here are of great importance for understanding military settlements, urban planning, and daily life in ancient colonies across Anatolia.
