Bozcaada (Tenedos)
Bozcaada is an Aegean Sea island located just inside the entrance to the Dardanelles, known for its abundant winds. This small island, formerly known as Tenedos, is Türkiye’s third largest island. Bozcaada is the only district without a village and has an area of approximately 40 square kilometers. Throughout history, the island has been distinguished by its strategic location and especially its vineyards.
Islands are generally landmasses surrounded by sea; what do you think it feels like to live in a place surrounded by water? The residents of Bozcaada view the wind and the sea as integral parts of their lives.
Time Travel ⏳
The history of Bozcaada extends back thousands of years, to approximately 3000 years ago. In antiquity, the island was known as “Tenedos.” Even coins minted during that period featured images of grape clusters, demonstrating how deeply rooted viticulture is here.
Due to its geographic position, the island has attracted the interest of various civilizations throughout history, including the Venetians, Genoese, Byzantines, and Ottomans. Each left its mark, and the Bozcaada Castle stands as a significant witness to these conflicts. The castle has been used and repaired in different periods.
Geographical Features 🗺️
Although Bozcaada exhibits typical Aegean Sea characteristics, its proximity to the Dardanelles exposes it frequently to strong northern winds. The island’s highest point is Göztepe, at 192 meters.
These winds shape the island’s unique climate and natural environment. For example, the constant poyraz breeze during summer is vital for the island’s most famous product: grapes. Summers in Bozcaada are cool and dry, while winters are mild and receive little rainfall.
Natural Life of Bozcaada 🌿
The island is home to plant communities typical of the Mediterranean climate, including shrubs, maquis, laurel, and wild olive trees.
However, what makes Bozcaada unique are its extensive vineyards in the interior. The combination of wind and soil structure creates an ideal environment for viticulture. Certain plant species, such as Borçanka, Sakız Ağacı, and Kum Sütleğeni, are particularly prominent in the island’s natural landscape.
Grapes 🍇
Viticulture is the most important part of the island’s economy and culture. This activity, mentioned even in Homer’s Iliad, has been practiced on the island for thousands of years.
The strong winds on Bozcaada protect the grapevines from diseases and contribute to the dryness that enhances the flavor of the grapes.
