Where Is This Church and How Old Is It?
Meryem Ana Kilisesi is located in the historic Sur district of Diyarbakır, in the Lalebey neighborhood. Scholars believe the church was constructed in the 3rd century, approximately 1750 to 1800 years ago. This makes it one of the oldest and most valuable structures in the city.
The church belongs to the ancient Syriac community and is the only Syriac church in Diyarbakır still used for worship today. Although it has been repaired many times over thousands of years, it continues to preserve its ancient and noble character.
A Journey Through Time
When the church was built in the 3rd century, many of the fortresses and large cities we see today had not yet been established in the region. The builders of this church used architectural styles inherited from the Roman era.

What Is Inside the Church?
This is not just a single room; it is a complex of structures. Inside, there are four large courtyards, classrooms (the schools of ancient times), residences for clergy, and sacred areas. At the entrance, you are greeted by a magnificent gate built in Roman style. Once inside, you will see dazzling woodwork, ornate column capitals, and colorful icons (religious paintings). Additionally, fourteen inscriptions (carved stones) written at different historical periods adorn the church walls, recounting events and repairs from its past.
Why Is It So Important?
This church is not only a place of worship but also a vital cultural center. For a full century in the past, it served as a Patriarchate center (administrative headquarters). The church also houses the tombs of renowned poets and religious figures.
One of the most captivating features for visitors is the belief that a small fragment of the cross on which Jesus Christ was crucified is preserved here. For this reason, people from all over the world come to visit this special site.
