Gölköy Castle is situated in the Gölköy district of Ordu Province in Türkiye. It lies in Kale Mahallesi, approximately four kilometers from the district center. The castle was built atop a massive rock formation at an elevation of about 150 meters. To visualize this height, imagine standing on the roof of a very tall multi-story building.

🛡️ What Was Its Purpose and How Was It Built?

During its time of construction, the castle served two primary purposes:

1. Surveillance: To monitor the surrounding vast area and provide early warnings of approaching threats.
2. Defense: To protect those inside during an attack and to resist enemy forces. Defense means safeguarding oneself or a vital location against danger.

The castle features a single entrance and spreads across a wide area. At its entrance stands a circular tower-like structure known as a burç, which also functioned as a watchtower. A burç is a cylindrical protrusion found at the corners of castles or walls, designed to enhance defensive capabilities. The castle was constructed by taking advantage of the natural rock formation beneath it, which significantly strengthened its structure.
