Gürün (District)
Gürün is a district located south of Sivas, surrounded by high mountains. It lies in a valley amid vast steppes, characterized by its waters and trees. Due to its strategic location, it has been an important settlement throughout history.
Where is Gürün?
Gürün is situated at a crossroads where Türkiye’s geographical regions—the Mediterranean, Eastern Anatolia, and Central Anatolia—converge. This position has enabled it to serve as a bridge between different regions throughout history. The district center is built in a deep valley between high mountains, along the banks of the Tohma Çayı.

Where Does the Name Come From?
There are various theories regarding the meaning of the name Gürün. The word “Gür” means abundant and powerful, while “Ün” means famous. Together, they convey the sense of “known for its abundance.” Gürün is renowned for its apples, shawls, water sources, and fish.
What Is It Famous For?
One of the first places that come to mind when thinking of Gürün is the Gökpınar Gölü. The water of this lake is so clear that aquatic life and even the stones at its deepest bottom can be seen distinctly. Additionally, the Şuğul Kanyonu, which cuts through massive cliffs, is one of the region’s important natural areas.
What Is Its Nature and Climate Like?
Summers in Gürün are hot and dry, while winters are harsh and snowy. The region is covered in snow during winter. The Tohma Çayı, the district’s most important water source, sustains fruit orchards and vegetation along the valley, ensuring the area remains green.
