Harran Tomb Houses
📍 Where Are the Kümbet Houses Located?
Kümbet houses are located in the Harran district of Şanlıurfa in the Southeastern Anatolia Region. This is one of the oldest settlement sites in Türkiye and even the world. Harran’s desert-like climate and historical fabric make these houses even more fascinating. The city resembles an open-air museum!

🏠 Why Do These Houses Have This Shape?
The most striking feature of Kümbet houses is their conical (cone-shaped) roofs. This roof design:
- Protects against summer heat (keeping the interior cool),
- Retains warmth during winter,
- Allows air circulation through a ventilation opening (functioning like a natural air conditioning system!).
The houses are built using sun-dried mud brick stone and mortar. The roofs are constructed without wood, using only stone and brick. This makes them both environmentally friendly and long-lasting.
