Hazretleri Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî
In the once-wise city of Şereflikoçhisar in Anatolia, a child was born whose light would illuminate hearts. His name was Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî. From an early age, he deeply loved knowledge and helping others. Over time, he became a sage, poet, and mystic whose example extended beyond his immediate surroundings to the entire Ottoman lands.
🌱Birth and Childhood
Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî was born in 1541 (Hijri 948) in Şereflikoçhisar near Konya. He was a sayyid, descended from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). For this reason, those around him regarded him as a noble figure both by lineage and by character. His family raised him with virtuous conduct and instilled in him a love of knowledge from a young age.

As a child, Mahmud Hüdâyî was deeply curious. He loved reading the Qur’an, seeking knowledge, and helping people. Even at a young age, he was patient, respectful, and generous. These qualities foreshadowed the wise man he would become.
📚Education
After receiving his early education in his birthplace, he traveled to Istanbul and studied at the most important madrasas of the era. He became a student of the renowned scholar Nazırzâde Ramazan Efendi. Due to his outstanding academic performance, he quickly earned the title of müderris (teacher).
Yet over time, a question grew within his heart: “If all this knowledge does not illuminate the human heart, is it not incomplete?”
✍️Poetry
Hüdâyî Hazretleri was not only a scholar but also a deeply emotional poet. In his verses, he spoke of love for God, the inner world of the human soul, and the spiritual journey. He declared, “What does the wise man gain from the world when his heart yearns for the hereafter?” affirming that true knowledge lies in the illumination of the heart.
🌿Sufi Life and Meeting with Üftâde Hazretleri
One day, while serving as a judge, Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî heard the name of a dervish greatly beloved by the people of Bursa: Mehmed Muhyiddin Üftâde Hazretleri. The wisdom in his words touched Hüdâyî’s heart. He resolved to abandon all his positions and titles and go to Üftâde Hazretleri.

Üftâde Hazretleri did not immediately accept him; instead, he tested Hüdâyî’s patience and humility. One day he said to him, “Go and sell livers in the market.” For a prominent judge of that era, this was an extremely difficult trial. Yet Hüdâyî Hazretleri took the livers in his hands and sold them on the street without any trace of pride. At that moment, peace arose within his heart: “From now on, I will listen not to my ego, but to my Lord.”

For many years he served beside Üftâde Hazretleri, learning the subtleties of Sufism. When Üftâde Hazretleri saw that he had matured, he said, “My son Hüdâyî, you too can now guide others,” and granted him the license of hilafet (spiritual authorization).
Thus, Aziz Mahmud Hüdâyî became the founder of the Celvetiyye Order. This path teaches closeness to God not through withdrawal from the world, but through service to humanity.
🗺️Where Did He Have Influence?
