July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day
July 15 Democracy and National Unity Day is an official commemorative day observed annually on July 15 in Türkiye to honor the people’s resistance against the coup attempt and their affirmation of national will.
🌙 The meaning and importance of today:
On the night of July 15, 2016, certain malicious military personnel in Türkiye attempted a coup. Their goal was to forcibly seize control of the government. However, the majority of the public, police, and military personnel resisted this attempt. That night, citizens took to the streets, united as one, and defended democracy. For this reason, July 15 is annually commemorated as “Democracy and National Unity Day.”
What Happened That Night?
On that night, some military personnel affiliated with a terrorist organization blocked roads with tanks, used aircraft to broadcast messages, and attempted to seize key state buildings. But the people would not allow it. Citizens from all corners of Türkiye went out onto the streets to oppose the attempt. Tragically, many lost their lives and became martyrs, but thanks to this struggle, Türkiye reclaimed its democracy.
Who Were the Heroes?
That night, police officers, the majority of military personnel, citizens, and some special duty personnel performed crucial acts of courage. For example, Ömer Halisdemir, a non-commissioned officer, displayed great heroism in resisting the coup plotters. Because of this, his name is remembered today in many schools, streets, and monuments.

Why Were Prayers Chanted from Mosques?
On the night of July 15 and in the following days, calls to prayer were broadcast from mosques. This was done to alert the public to the danger and to call for unity. This tradition is repeated every year on the evening of July 15.
Why Must We Never Forget Today?
Because that night, people fought for Türkiye, a country where they could freely express their opinions. Had the coup succeeded, citizens would no longer have been able to vote freely or express their thoughts without fear. Democracy—the people’s right to choose their own leaders—was in grave danger.
