The Heroic City of the War of Independence
About a hundred years ago, Kilis endured difficult times. First the British, then the French occupied the city. However, the people of Kilis rose with great courage to defend their homeland. When Mustafa Kemal Pasha arrived in Kilis, he witnessed the people’s determination and was deeply moved.
Pasha expressed his confidence in the people of Kilis with these words: “You do not allow yourselves to be plundered. Long live the people of Kilis!” Many heroes played vital roles in the city’s defense, including Şahin Bey, İslam Bey, and Sakıp Bey. After a tremendous struggle, Kilis finally regained its freedom on 7 December 1921.
