Time Travel
The Demirciler Konağı was constructed approximately 200 years ago, precisely in 1825. At that time, the Ottoman Sultan was Mahmud II. The mansion was commissioned by Abdullah Şerif Ağa, a prominent educator and müderris of Süleymaniye.
What Does the Mansion Look Like?
The Demirciler Konağı is an excellent example of 19th-century Ottoman architecture. This three-story house was built adjacent to neighboring buildings in a continuous row. The mansion features two separate entrance doors.
One of its most striking features is the intricate kalem işi decorations both inside and on the exterior façade. Kalem işi refers to colorful patterns and ornamental designs applied with fine-tipped brushes onto walls and ceilings. These embellishments highlight the building’s value and uniqueness. The exterior façade also features wooden shutter cladding.
What Was Inside?
The ground floor of this three-story mansion covers approximately 190 square meters. Each level served distinct purposes:
- Ground Floor: This area was designated for animals and storage. It housed a stable, a hayloft, and a cellar for food preservation.
- Upper Floors: These were the living quarters of the family. They contained four rooms and two sofa areas — communal living spaces resembling spacious halls.
