How Did This Massive Structure Come Into Being?
The Manazan Caves are not a natural formation but entirely the product of human labor. This towering rock mass, located in Karaman’s Yeşildere Valley, is composed of clayey limestone. Because limestone is a soft stone, ancient people were able to carve it easily. The caves are precisely five stories high. Inside, rooms are connected by narrow corridors and shafts, alongside spacious halls and galleries. People used these rooms not only for living but also for protection and worship.
What Is Inside the Caves?
Each level of this massive rock apartment has its own name and story. The local people have named these levels Kum Kale, At Meydanı, and Ölüler Meydanı. As you wander between the levels, you may feel as if you are lost in a labyrinth. The limestone structure inside the caves keeps the air cool in summer and warm in winter. Thanks to this feature, food and belongings stored within remained unspoiled for long periods. Archaeologists have even discovered artifacts here that have remained intact for over a thousand years.
The Hidden History Within the Rocks
Although the exact time of the caves’ construction remains unknown, the traces inside reveal that during the Byzantine Period, around 1,400 years ago, this was a bustling settlement. At that time, people used these steep cliffs as a fortress for protection. Geometric decorations and remnants of colorful paintings (frescoes) can still be seen on the cave walls. These images are like letters from the past, preserving the beliefs and artistic sensibilities of the people who lived there.
