Matka Canyon

North Macedonia is a beautiful country, and just near its capital, Skopje, lies a magical place that leaves visitors in awe: Matka Canyon! This is a remarkable natural park where massive gray cliffs meet the blue sky and lush green trees above icy waters.

The word “Matka” means “Mother” in the local language. Like a mother opening her arms to embrace her children, this canyon lovingly protects its icy lake, mysterious caves, and colorful wildlife.

Matka Kanyonu (Anadolu Ajansı)

Formed over countless years by nature’s own hands, this canyon covers a vast area. At its center lies a striking emerald-green lake known as the Matka Lake.

Actually, this lake is artificial, created by a human-built dam, yet it is so beautiful that it appears as if it has always been there, seamlessly blending with the towering cliffs around it. Seen from above, it sparkles like a ribbon of light laid across a green velvet carpet.

One of the most exciting sites in Matka Canyon is the hidden Vrelo Cave, nestled beside the water’s edge. This cave resembles the mysterious passageways found in adventure films!

• Massive Stalactites and Stalagmites: Stalactites hang from the cave ceiling, while stalagmites rise from the floor. These are natural masterpieces formed over thousands of years by the slow accumulation of water droplets.
• The Deepest in the Balkans: Part of the Vrelo Cave lies beneath the water’s surface. It is known as the deepest underwater cave in the Balkans. Scientists and specialized divers continue to explore its depths, still searching for its end.

Matka Canyon is not only a natural wonder but also a time machine through history. In ancient times, people built hidden monasteries, churches, and fortresses into the steep cliffs.

As you walk along the canyon’s narrow paths, you will encounter these historic structures adorned with colorful frescoes painted centuries ago using natural pigments. These paintings whisper to children and travelers alike of the canyon’s once vital and protected status.

Entering Matka Canyon is completely free, opening nature’s doors wide to everyone. There are so many enjoyable activities for children and families that you will lose track of time:

• Boat Tours: Take a small boat ride across the canyon’s emerald waters and look up to admire the towering cliffs that rise toward the sky.
• Canoeing: If you prefer to paddle on your own, hop into colorful canoes and glide across the water.
