Who Was Nizam al-Mulk?
Nizam al-Mulk was one of the most famous viziers of the Great Seljuk State. His real name was Hasan ibn Ali. The title “Nizam al-Mulk,” meaning “Order of the State,” was bestowed upon him later, because he governed the state with justice and established a well-organized and powerful system. He was also a highly learned individual who wrote books and supported scholars and scientists.
When and Where Did He Live?
Nizam al-Mulk was born in 1018 in the city of Tus, in present-day Iran. He received an excellent education in his youth and later began serving in the Seljuk State. He served as vizier during the reigns of Alp Arslan and his son Malik-Shah. He died in 1092. During his lifetime, the affairs of the state were conducted in orderly fashion thanks to his leadership.
How Did He Govern the State?
Nizam al-Mulk was not merely an advisor. He was the most important figure in the Seljuk State after the sultan. He listened to the people’s concerns, organized courts, formulated military plans, and managed the state’s revenues and expenditures. He insisted that everyone act justly and advocated for assistance to the poor and the prevention of injustice toward anyone.
The Book “Siyasatname”
Nizam al-Mulk wrote a highly important book intended as a guide for rulers: the Siyasatname. In this book, he explained how a state should be governed. He illustrated with examples how kings and sultans should treat their subjects with justice. This book inspired rulers for centuries.
Nizamiye Madrasas
Nizam al-Mulk placed great importance on science. Therefore, the Nizamiye Madrasas established in his name became among the most renowned schools of the Middle Ages. Subjects such as mathematics, astronomy, and religious studies were taught in these madrasas. As a result, many scholars and scientists were trained. Students at these schools lived on campus and received free education!
Why Is He Important?
Nizam al-Mulk is not only one of the most respected statesmen of his own time but also one of the most revered in all of history. The orderly system he established strengthened the Seljuk State. Through his writings and the madrasas he founded, knowledge spread, justice was upheld, and culture flourished. His works influenced many states, including the Ottomans.
