Tol Medrese (Karaman)
Tol Medrese is an ancient educational institution located in the Ermenek district of Karaman province, Türkiye. Centuries ago, this structure served as a center for knowledge and learning. While it can be compared to modern schools, its architecture and history make it unique.
📜 A Journey Through Time
Tol Medrese was constructed precisely between 1339 and 1340, approximately 680 years ago. At that time, a powerful state known as the Karamanids ruled over Karaman and its surroundings. The medrese was commissioned by Emir Musa Bey of the Karamanids. During that era, medreses were the sole institutions for acquiring essential knowledge, and Emir Musa Bey placed great importance on education.

🧱 What Kind of Structure Is It?
The medrese is built from thick cut stone. It is a single-story building with a large central courtyard (open area). Surrounding this courtyard are arcades—covered, arched passageways. Behind these arcades are rooms where students attended lessons and resided.
🚪 Why Is It Called "Tol"?
The word "Tol" in Old Turkish means "large" or "tall." The most striking feature of the medrese is its entrance gate, which is significantly more imposing and elevated compared to other parts of the structure. It is believed that the medrese acquired its name, "Tol Medrese," due to this tall and ornate gate. This grand entrance underscores its status as an important structure of its time.

🕌 What Was the Purpose of the Medrese?
During its founding years, Tol Medrese functioned as an educational institution where religious knowledge, language, literature, and science were taught. Students—known as fakih and mütefekkih—lived there and attended classes.
- Concrete Example: Just as students today attend mathematics or history classes, children and young people of that era learned essential knowledge within this medrese.
In addition to classrooms, the building contains a türbe (tomb monument) belonging to Emir Musa Bey, the founder of the medrese, and his family. This demonstrates that the medrese was not merely a school but also a significant commemorative structure.
