Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC)

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is a small country located in the northern part of the island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea. It is very close to Türkiye and is also known as the “Young Homeland.” Approximately 300,000 people live there. The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus attracts attention with its natural beauty, historical structures, and a cultural fabric shaped by diverse civilizations. Its capital is Nicosia. The official language is Turkish and the currency is the Turkish lira. The majority of the population is of Turkish origin.

Where Is It Located?

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus is situated in the center of the Mediterranean Sea, south of Türkiye. It occupies the northern portion of the island and is very near to Türkiye. The climate generally exhibits Mediterranean characteristics: summers are long, hot and sunny; winters are short and mild. The region’s mountains, plains and coastlines are rich in natural beauty. Olive trees, citrus orchards and forested areas are among the natural assets of Northern Cyprus.

History

The island of Cyprus has been inhabited for approximately 10,000 years. In ancient times, many civilizations including the Phoenicians, Romans, Byzantines and Ottomans ruled the island. In 1571, the Ottoman Empire began administering the island. From 1878 onward, Britain became active on the island. In 1960, the Republic of Cyprus was established; however, disputes between Turkish Cypriots and Greek Cypriots led to divisions.

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus was proclaimed on 15 November 1983. Since that date, Northern Cyprus has been governed by its own parliament and government.

Culture

In Northern Cyprus, both historical ruins and natural beauties can be found. Ancient castles, mosques, monasteries and classical cities are among the sites open to visitors. Kyrenia Castle, the Ancient City of Salamis, Bellapais Monastery and the Walls of Nicosia are the most well-known historical structures. Additionally, it is possible to enjoy time in nature through its beaches, sea turtles and hiking trails.

In Northern Cyprus, diverse natural areas such as seas, forests, mountains and plains can be found. Some terrestrial and marine species living in these regions are noteworthy. For example, the Mediterranean Monk Seal, a rare species, also inhabits the coasts of Northern Cyprus.
