What Was the Battle of Manzikert?
The Battle of Manzikert was a major conflict fought on 26 August 1071 between the Seljuk Sultan Alp Arslan and the Byzantine Emperor Romanos IV Diogenes. This battle opened the door for the Turkish entry into Anatolia and altered the course of history.
How Did the Battle Begin?
In the 11th century, Turks began migrating from Central Asia westward into Anatolia. The Byzantine Empire prepared a large army to resist this movement. Sultan Alp Arslan also marched with his forces to the Manzikert Plain to establish Anatolia as a new homeland.
