Though known for their smiling faces, dolphins are not only cute but also highly intelligent and social creatures!

What Is a Dolphin?

Dolphins are marine mammals. Although they swim like fish, they are not fish because:

• They breathe with lungs,
• They give birth to live young,
• They nurse their offspring with milk.

Dolphins belong to the whale family and are considered small whale species. The most well-known types include:

• Bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)
• Killer whale (orca) – in fact, the largest species of dolphin!

Today, there are more than 40 dolphin species living in the world’s oceans and some rivers.

Where Do They Live?

Dolphins typically live in:

• Warm and tropical seas,
• Shallow coastal areas,
• Some species live in rivers (for example, the Amazon river dolphin).

In the seas of Türkiye (especially the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea), bottlenose dolphins can be found.

How Do They Breathe?

Dolphins breathe through a blowhole on top of their heads. This opening is covered by a flap that opens and closes.

They surface every few minutes to breathe. Even when sleeping, they do so differently:

• One half of their brain sleeps while the other half stays awake, ensuring they never forget to breathe!

Intelligence and Communication Skills

Dolphins can:

• Solve problems,
• Recognize themselves in mirrors,
• Be easily trained,
• Even be observed helping humans!

For communication, they use:

• Whistle-like sounds,
• Clicks,
• Body movements.
• Each dolphin has its own unique “whistle” – essentially acting as its name!

How Do They Hunt and Feed?

Dolphins are carnivores. Their diet includes:

• Small fish,
• Squid,
• Cephalopods.

When hunting, they move in groups. Sometimes they use bubble nets to herd fish together, making it easier to catch them.

Echolocation: Seeing Without Eyes!

Dolphins navigate using a method called echolocation.

• They emit clicking sounds.
• These sounds bounce off objects and return as echoes.
• By analyzing the returning echoes, they determine the location and distance of prey.

This system is similar to how bats navigate at night.

Social Life and Groups

Dolphins are highly social animals. They typically live in:

• Pods of 3 to 30 individuals,
• Cooperating to hunt, play, and care for young,
• And have been observed helping sick or injured companions rather than abandoning them.

Threats and Conservation

Dolphins today face several threats:

• Marine pollution,
• Becoming entangled in fishing nets,
• Noise pollution (sonar, ship engines),
• Coastal development.

In many countries, dolphins are protected by law. In Türkiye, it is illegal to harm dolphins.
