Deveciler Hanı – Tokat
Deveciler Hanı is a very old commercial building located in the city center of Tokat. Built during the Ottoman period, this han served as a place where merchants could stay and store their goods. At that time, Tokat was an important trading center along caravan routes, leading to the construction of many hans in the city, of which Deveciler Hanı became one of the most notable.
Historical and Cultural Significance
In the past, merchants traveling long distances by camel sought safe places to spend the night. These hans provided both rest and secure storage for their goods. Deveciler Hanı was constructed for this very purpose. People engaged in trade, conversed, and lodged here. As a result, hans were among the most vibrant centers of social life in the city.

Architectural Features
Deveciler Hanı is an excellent example of Ottoman architecture. The structure is built of stone and has two stories. The ground floor contains compartments for housing animals and storing goods, while the upper floor consists of rooms where merchants stayed. At its center is a large courtyard, an open space used both for rest and commercial activity. The entrance is adorned with a large arch, and the stonework is executed with great care.

Current Condition
Over time, the han fell out of use, but it was later restored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. Today, it functions as the Tokat Culture House. Here, Tokat’s handicrafts, traditional cuisine, and cultural heritage are showcased. Exhibitions, events, and performances are also held here. Thus, an historic structure has been preserved while simultaneously becoming a new cultural center.
