Amin Maalouf is a author and journalist elected to the Académie Française. His works focus on intercultural relations identity issues and social analysis. Maalouf has gained international recognition and won numerous awards for his works translated into many languages.


YOUTH AND EDUCATION

Maalouf was born in 1949 in Beirut the capital of Lebanon. Raised in a Christian family he received his education at French Jesuit schools. His family’s interest in journalism steered him toward a career in this field. He studied economics and sociology at the French University of Beirut. These disciplines provided him with a foundation for understanding cultural and social issues in his writing career.


CAREER AND ACHIEVEMENTS

Amin Maalouf began his career as a writer at the newspaper An-Nahar at the age of 22. In 1976 he moved to France due to the civil war in Lebanon. He continued his journalism career working for the French magazines Jeune Afrique and An-Nahar such as. He gained major recognition with his 1983 book The Crusades Through Arab Eyes. This work brought him widespread acclaim by offering a perspective on the Crusades distinct from Western sources. In 1993 he won the Prix Goncourt for his novel The Rock of Tanios.


MAJOR WORKS AND CONTRIBUTIONS

Maalouf has deeply explored east-west culture conflicts and identity issues developing through his writings a distinctive perspective on social and cultural matters. Among his most renowned works are Leo the African Samarkand The Gardens of Light Deadly Identities and The Origins of the Paths place. He also wrote librettos in 2002 for the opera by Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho.
