Ant Man and the Wasp (Film)

Ant-Man and the Wasp, directed by Peyton Reed and released in 2018, is an American superhero science fiction action film. Starring Paul Rudd and Evangeline Lilly, the film is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and follows events after Captain America: Civil War (2016). The film centers on Scott Lang, who struggles to balance his responsibilities as a superhero with his duties as a father, as he joins Dr. Hank Pym and Hope van Dyne on a new mission to the Quantum Realm.

The film opens during the final days of Scott Lang’s house arrest, imposed after his actions in Captain America: Civil War violated the Sokovia Accords. While under house arrest, Lang loses contact with Hank Pym and his daughter Hope van Dyne. Pym and Hope secretly construct a quantum tunnel to retrieve Janet van Dyne, Pym’s wife and Hope’s mother, who disappeared into the Quantum Realm in 1987 while attempting to disable a Soviet nuclear missile.

When Pym and Hope briefly succeed in opening the tunnel, Scott Lang, due to his prior visit to the Quantum Realm, experiences quantum entanglement with Janet and receives a message from her. To avoid attracting the attention of FBI agent Jimmy Woo, Lang leaves a giant ant in his place and contacts Pym and Hope. Armed with this evidence that Janet is alive, the trio begins working to stabilize the tunnel.

To obtain a missing component needed to complete the tunnel, they move to acquire it from black-market dealer Sonny Burch; however, Burch, recognizing the commercial potential of Pym’s research, refuses to hand over the part and betrays them. While Hope van Dyne, in her Wasp suit, fights Burch’s men, they are attacked by Ava Starr, a masked woman known as Ghost, who suffers from quantum instability and can phase through solid matter. Ava steals Pym’s portable laboratory.

To recover the laboratory, the team seeks help from Pym’s former colleague Dr. Bill Foster. It is revealed that Foster has been working with Ava Starr. Ava’s father, Elihas Starr, was once Pym’s partner and died during a quantum experiment that caused a catastrophic explosion. The accident left Ava with “molecular instability,” later weaponized by S.H.I.E.L.D. Foster and Ava plan to use Janet’s quantum energy to cure Ava’s condition; however, Pym refuses to assist, warning that the procedure would kill Janet.

The team recovers the laboratory and successfully stabilizes the tunnel. They establish communication with Janet in the Quantum Realm, who provides her exact location and reveals that only two hours remain before the two universes are permanently separated. Meanwhile, Sonny Burch learns the team’s location through Scott’s associates Luis, Dave, and Kurt and reports them to the FBI. To prevent discovery of his house arrest violation, Scott must return home, while Pym and Hope are arrested by the FBI and the laboratory is seized by Ava.

Scott helps Pym and Hope escape from the FBI. He then engages in a battle against Ava and Burch’s men to reclaim the laboratory. Hank Pym enters the Quantum Realm, locates Janet, and brings her back to the real world. Upon returning, Janet voluntarily transfers part of her quantum energy to Ava, temporarily stabilizing her molecular structure. Scott Lang returns to his home just seconds before FBI agent Jimmy Woo conducts a raid and completes his house arrest sentence. Ava and Foster flee into hiding.

In the mid-credits scene, Scott Lang re-enters the Quantum Realm with the help of Pym, Hope, and Janet to gather healing energy for Ava. While Lang is inside, concurrent with events in Avengers: Infinity War (2018), the Pym family is disintegrated by Thanos’s actions and vanishes into dust, leaving Scott Lang trapped in the Quantum Realm^【1】.

• Scott Lang / Ant-Man (Paul Rudd): A former convict who wears a suit capable of shrinking and growing in size. He is under house arrest for violating the Sokovia Accords and seeks to repair his relationship with his daughter Cassie (Abby Ryder Fortson).

• Sonny Burch (Walton Goggins): A criminal who seeks to exploit the commercial potential of quantum technology.
• Luis (Michael Peña): Scott Lang’s former cellmate and current business partner.
• Jimmy Woo (Randall Park): The FBI agent assigned to monitor Scott Lang’s house arrest.

Peyton Reed returns as director, as he did in the first film. The screenplay was written by a team of writers including Chris McKenna, Erik Sommers, Paul Rudd, Andrew Barrer, and Gabriel Ferrari. The film was produced by Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, and Adam Cooper.

Dante Spinotti served as cinematographer, and the original score was composed by Christophe Beck. Editing was handled by Dan Lebental and Craig Wood.

The film has a runtime of 1 hour and 58 minutes (118 minutes) and was shot in a 2.39:1 aspect ratio. It was prepared for theatrical release with support for 12-Track Digital Sound, Dolby Surround 7.1, IMAX 6-Track, Dolby Atmos, Auro 11.1, and SDDS audio formats. The film was also released in 3D and IMAX formats^【2】.

The film received 21 award nominations, including for Best Action Film at the Teen Choice Awards and from the Visual Effects Society, and won two awards^【3】.

Ant-Man and the Wasp premiered on 6 July 2018. With an estimated budget of $162 million, the film reached a wide global audience.
