Batman Begins is a superhero film co-produced by the United States and the United Kingdom, directed by Christopher Nolan and released in 2005. It is based on the character Batman from DC Comics. Adapted from characters created by Bob Kane, the screenplay was written by David S. Goyer and Christopher Nolan, and it blends the genres of drama, crime, action, adventure, and fantasy. The film explores Bruce Wayne’s journey as he confronts his traumatic past and assumes the identity of Batman in his struggle to save Gotham City from corruption. As a child, Bruce Wayne witnesses the murder of his parents, Thomas and Martha Wayne, by a mugger named Joe Chill in a narrow alley. Years later, as a young man, Bruce plans to kill Chill to avenge his parents, but Chill is shot by a hitman working for crime lord Carmine Falcone. Inspired by his childhood friend and assistant district attorney Rachel Dawes, who reminds him that justice is different from revenge, Bruce embarks on a global journey to find ways to combat injustice and understand the psychology of criminals. In a prison in Asia, Bruce meets Henri Ducard and joins the League of Shadows, an organization led by Ra’s Al Ghul, where he undergoes intensive training in martial arts and overcoming fear. However, upon learning of the organization’s plan to destroy Gotham and its insistence on murder as a means to achieve order, Bruce rebels, burns down their temple, and returns to his city^【1】.

After returning to Gotham, Bruce, with the help of Lucius Fox, an engineer at Wayne Enterprises’ Applied Sciences division, acquires a heavily armored vehicle (the Tumbler) and a high-tech protective suit. With the support of his loyal butler Alfred Pennyworth, Bruce adopts the bat motif from his childhood fears to create the persona of Batman. Collaborating with honest police officers, Sergeant Jim Gordon and Rachel Dawes, he dismantles Falcone’s criminal empire. During this process, he discovers that Dr. Jonathan Crane (Scarecrow) has used a hallucinogenic fear toxin to drive Falcone insane and has planned to release the toxin into Gotham’s water supply.

Behind the events is his former mentor Henri Ducard, who is revealed to be the real Ra’s Al Ghul. Ra’s Al Ghul plans to use a microwave emitter stolen from Wayne Enterprises to vaporize the toxin in Gotham’s water supply and plunge the entire city into chaos and terror. Batman gives Gordon the armored vehicle to destroy the railway tracks, then boards the train and defeats Ra’s Al Ghul, thwarting the plan. Afterward, Bruce takes full control of Wayne Enterprises and appoints Lucius Fox as its CEO. His fight continues when Lieutenant Gordon informs him of a new criminal leaving Joker cards at crime scenes^【2】.

Christopher Nolan directed the film, with producers Charles Roven, Larry J. Franco, and Emma Thomas. Wally Pfister served as cinematographer and Lee Smith as editor. The musical score was composed jointly by renowned composers Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard. With an estimated budget of $150 million, the production involved Warner Bros., DC Comics, and Syncopy. Some filming took place in the Skaftafell region of Iceland. The film premiered in the United States and the United Kingdom on 17 June 2005 and is scheduled for a theatrical re-release on 22 August 2025. Distribution in Türkiye was handled by Warner Bros. It also received Saturn Award nominations for Best Supporting Actor (Liam Neeson), Best Supporting Actress (Katie Holmes), Best Director, Best Music, Best Costume Design, and Best Special Effects. At the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA), it was nominated for Best Production Design, Best Sound, and Best Visual Effects. At the MTV Movie Awards, Christian Bale won Best Hero, and Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard received the ASCAP Film and Television Music Award for Top Box Office Films^【6】.

In its opening weekend in the United States and Canada on 19 June 2005, it earned $48,745,440, bringing its total gross in the region to $206,863,479. Its worldwide box office total reached $375,579,998. In Türkiye, during its opening weekend, it was watched by 54,070 viewers, generating ₺419,708 in revenue. By the end of its 23-week theatrical run, it had attracted 228,632 viewers and accumulated a total revenue of ₺4,445,686^【7】.
