Black Swan is a 2010 psychological thriller film directed by Darren Aronofsky. Starring Natalie Portman, the film centers on a modern staging of Tchaikovsky’s famous ballet Swan Lake and explores the mental unraveling of a ballerina in pursuit of perfection. Combining psychological thriller elements with themes of art, sexuality, and mother-daughter conflict, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and earned Natalie Portman an Oscar for "Best Actress."
Nina Sayers, a young ballerina living in New York, lives with her mother and dances in the New York City Ballet. The artistic director of the ballet company, Thomas Leroy, searches for a new lead dancer for Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake. He is looking for a dancer who can successfully perform both the innocent White Swan and the seductive Black Swan roles simultaneously. Although Nina stands out with her technically perfect White Swan performance, she must confront her darker side to take on the Black Swan role. During this process, both her relationship with her rival Lily and her inner psychosis deepen.
Black Swan is a transformation story revolving around identity fragmentation, mental collapse, and the destructive effects of perfectionism. The film addresses suppressed individuality through the oppressive relationship with a controlling mother, while exploring themes of the female body and sexuality as a conflict between control and desire. The blurring of boundaries between reality and hallucination intensifies the character’s psychotic breakdown.
