Arabic sl root, from the verb teselsul (تسلسل), meaning "to be chained" or "to extend in consecutive rings," comes from the term mutasalsil (متسلسل). The word is structurally based on a quadriliteral verb root and is the second active participle (ism-i fâil) form in the mutafaˁfiˁ pattern. This morphological structure imparts to the concept both a sense of motion and an interconnected linkage within a chain. Etymologically, mutasalsil represents a systematic unity in which components cease to be independent units and instead follow one another in an unbroken sequence like links in a chain.
