Cuckoo Bird (Film)

Directed by Miloš Forman, Guguk Kuşu (One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, 1975) is regarded as one of the most influential works of American independent cinema. Adapted from Ken Kesey’s novel of the same name, the film questions the oppression of individuals by totalitarian systems through dramatic events set in a psychiatric hospital. The film secured its place in cinema history by winning the “Big Five” Academy Awards in 1976: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Actress, and Best Adapted Screenplay.

Randle Patrick McMurphy, a rebellious and free-spirited convict, is transferred to a psychiatric hospital instead of prison on the grounds of criminal incompetence. There, he clashes with both the other patients and Nurse Ratched, who embodies the institution’s rigid authority. The film explores themes of freedom, individuality, and power, taking viewers on a thought-provoking journey.

Several scenes were developed through improvisation.

Budgeted at approximately $3 million, the film earned over $163 million worldwide. Considering the conditions of the time, this figure made the film a major financial success.
