Dart; a closed motor skill-based sport requiring high concentration, hand-eye coordination, and precise mathematical calculation, played by throwing small arrows at a circular target. In a standard competition, players aim to reduce a predetermined score to zero or reach a target score in the shortest time possible, based on a mathematical scoring system. It is a discipline that demands the synchronized operation of fine motor skills and intense mental focus, not merely physical throwing practice.

Playing Area and Equipment Standards

The target board used in competitions consists of twenty equal segments radiating outward from the center, each with different colors and point values. All equipment and field setup measurements adhere to international metric standards.

Field Dimensions and Target Board Setup

The throwing line (oche) is positioned directly perpendicular to the center of the target board. The exact height of the board’s center (bullseye) from the floor is 1.73 meters.【1】 In competitions using steel-tipped darts, the horizontal distance between the throwing line, behind which the player must stand, and the front surface of the board (not the wall but the board’s surface) must be exactly 2.37 meters.【2】 The diagonal distance between the center of the board and the rear of the throwing line is 2.93 meters.【3】

Players are prohibited from stepping on the throwing line (oche) during their throw. If a player steps on the line, they receive a verbal warning for the first violation, a yellow card for the second, and a red card for the third, resulting in immediate loss of the set (leg).

Target Board Scoring Zones【4】

The scoring system on the target board is divided into specific rings:

  • Inner Bullseye: The red center of the board, worth 50 points.
  • Outer Bullseye: The green ring surrounding the inner bullseye, worth 25 points.
  • Double Ring: The outermost ring of the board. A dart landing in this ring scores double the value of the segment it hits.
  • Treble Ring: The inner ring located in the middle section of the board. A dart landing in this ring scores triple the value of the segment it hits.

Dart Specifications

Darts used in competitions must not exceed 30.5 centimeters in total length and 50 grams in weight.【5】 A dart consists anatomically of four main parts: a tip made of steel or plastic for electronic boards, a barrel that provides grip, a shaft that balances the dart, and a flight that guides its flight through the air.

Throwing Rules and Competition Format

Competitions are typically based on reducing a starting score such as 301, 501, or 701 down to zero. Each score earned is subtracted from the starting total.【6】

Throwing and Scoring Dynamics

Each player is allowed three darts per turn, thrown one at a time and only with their hand. A dart must embed itself in the board and remain stationary until the referee records the score to count. Darts that fall off the board, bounce off the floor, or strike other darts already on the board and deflect away receive no points and do not grant a rethrow. A player’s turn ends immediately upon touching any of their darts still embedded in the board before completing their throw sequence.

Check-out and Bust Rules

To win a set, a player reaching zero must finish with a double (any segment on the outer ring) or the inner bullseye (50 points).【7】 If the total score of a player’s darts exceeds the remaining points, reduces the score to exactly one, or reaches zero without finishing on a double, the “bust” rule applies.【8】 In a bust situation, the player’s turn ends and their score reverts to the value it had at the start of their previous turn.

Infrastructure and School Sports Organizations

Within the framework of school sports activities in Türkiye, competitions are organized separately for boys and girls in the following categories: mini, junior, star, and youth.

School teams consist of at least three main players and up to four (three main, one substitute) student athletes.【9】 Direct participation in national or group competitions without first competing in local tournaments is prohibited. Teams are required to bring their own equipment and wear uniform attire. Based on educational levels, middle school students compete in the star category and high school students in the youth category. With official parental consent, athletes meeting age criteria may be promoted to a higher category; however, once promoted, they are ineligible to compete again in any lower category.

Physical and Cognitive Performance Dynamics

Dart is a sport that requires high-level cognitive control and mental calmness rather than muscular strength. Peak performance is achieved through the brain’s perfect refinement of the throwing mechanics.

Mental Imagery and Circadian Rhythm

Consistent accurate targeting is directly linked to the athlete’s ability to perform mental imagery, which is the conscious mental rehearsal of a physical movement without actual muscle activation. Regular mental focus exercises conducted at any time of day (independent of circadian rhythm) significantly and statistically enhance throwing performance in closed motor skill activities.

Impact on Attention and Concentration

Repeated practice of fine motor skills and hand-eye coordination automates attentional abilities. Regular dart training directly extends attention span in individuals aged 11 to 13 with attention deficit and concentration difficulties. The focused aiming and calculation routines during throws, combined with mental calmness, positively contribute to academic and personal attention capacity.
